BODY PIERCING CONSENT, HEALTH & LIABILITY WAIVER
Please read this document carefully before receiving any body piercing service. By signing below, you confirm that you understand the information provided, have had the opportunity to ask questions, and voluntarily consent to the piercing procedure.
1. BODY PIERCING REGULATIONS & ELIGIBILITY
Before making or attending a piercing appointment, please review the following requirements.
You may not receive a body piercing if you:
• Are below the legal age permitted by applicable law. Our studio's minimum age and minor consent requirements apply to all piercing services.
• Are under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs.
• Are receiving a piercing against your will or under pressure from another person.
• Have an active infection, significant irritation, rash, open wound, or other abnormal skin condition at or immediately surrounding the intended piercing site.
• Have a condition that makes piercing unsafe without medical clearance.
Health Conditions & Medical Disclosure
Certain medical conditions, medications, allergies, and other circumstances may increase the risk of bleeding, infection, delayed healing, scarring, or other complications.
Please inform your piercer before your appointment if you have, or have a history of:
• Allergies or known sensitivities, including metal allergies
• Diabetes
• Hemophilia or other blood disorders
• Sarcoidosis
• Skin conditions or disorders
• Autoimmune conditions
• Cardiovascular conditions
• Significant scar tissue or a history of keloid formation
• Damaged, irritated, infected, or otherwise abnormal skin
• Conditions that may affect your immune system or ability to heal
• Any condition or medication that may affect bleeding or wound healing
Please also disclose any medications, supplements, or other substances that may affect bleeding, healing, or your ability to safely undergo the procedure.
If you are unsure whether a piercing is appropriate for you because of a medical condition, medication, pregnancy, or other health concern, consult your healthcare provider before receiving the service.
2. CLIENT INFORMATION & RISKS
Body piercing involves creating a wound through the skin or other body tissue and inserting jewelry into the piercing site. Although proper technique, sterile equipment, appropriate jewelry, and proper aftercare can reduce risks, complications may still occur.
Possible risks include, but are not limited to:
• Pain, tenderness, redness, and swelling
• Bleeding or bruising
• Infection
• Allergic or sensitivity reactions to jewelry or aftercare products
• Irritation or inflammation
• Delayed or prolonged healing
• Scarring
• Keloid formation
• Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation
• Bumps or localized swelling
• Jewelry migration or rejection
• Jewelry embedding or becoming too tight due to swelling
• Tearing or trauma to the piercing
• Changes to the surrounding tissue
• Damage to teeth or gums with oral piercings
• Damage to nerves, blood vessels, or other tissue
• Possible permanent changes to the appearance of the pierced area
• The possibility that the piercing may not heal successfully
Healing times vary depending on the piercing location, individual anatomy, jewelry, lifestyle, health, and aftercare.
A piercer may determine that a requested piercing is not anatomically suitable or advisable and may decline or modify the requested placement for safety reasons.
3. JEWELRY & ANATOMY
I understand that jewelry selection and proper fit are important parts of the piercing process.
I acknowledge that:
• My anatomy will be evaluated before piercing.
• The piercer may recommend a different placement, jewelry size, style, or material based on my anatomy and safety considerations.
• Jewelry may need to be downsized, changed, or otherwise adjusted during the healing process.
• I am responsible for returning for recommended checkups or jewelry adjustments.
• Jewelry that is too tight, too heavy, or improperly fitted may contribute to irritation, migration, rejection, embedding, or delayed healing.
• Jewelry can become caught on clothing, hair, towels, bedding, or other objects and may cause injury.
• I am responsible for informing my piercer if jewelry becomes too tight, embedded, damaged, lost, or otherwise problematic.
I understand that even properly performed piercings can experience complications due to individual anatomy, healing characteristics, accidental trauma, or aftercare.
4. AFTERCARE & INFECTION RISKS
Proper aftercare is an essential part of the healing process. I agree to follow the aftercare instructions provided by my piercer.
During Healing:
• Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the piercing.
• Clean the piercing according to the aftercare instructions provided by your piercer.
• Do not unnecessarily touch, twist, rotate, or play with the jewelry.
• Do not pick at crusting, scabs, or dried discharge.
• Avoid soaking the piercing in pools, hot tubs, lakes, oceans, baths, or other bodies of water when advised by your piercer.
• Avoid unnecessary pressure, friction, or trauma to the piercing.
• Keep clothing, bedding, towels, phones, headphones, helmets, and other items that contact the piercing clean.
• Avoid applying alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, harsh antiseptics, ointments, or other products that have not been recommended by your piercer or healthcare professional.
• Do not remove the jewelry if you suspect an infection unless instructed to do so by a healthcare professional.
• Avoid changing the jewelry prematurely. A piercing may appear healed externally while the inside of the piercing channel is still healing.
• Follow any additional aftercare instructions provided for your specific piercing.
Signs of Normal Healing
The following may occur during normal healing:
• Mild redness
• Mild swelling
• Tenderness or soreness
• Minor bruising
• Mild itching
• Small amounts of clear or slightly whitish/yellowish lymph fluid
• Crusting around the jewelry
These symptoms should generally decrease as healing progresses.
Possible Signs of Infection or Complications
Contact a healthcare professional if you experience:
• Increasing redness, swelling, warmth, or pain
• Severe or worsening pain
• Thick, increasing, or foul-smelling discharge
• Green, dark yellow, or otherwise abnormal discharge
• Redness that continues to spread from the piercing
• Fever or chills
• Flu-like symptoms
• Significant swelling
• Difficulty moving the affected area
• Red streaking extending away from the piercing
• Jewelry becoming embedded in the tissue
• Significant tissue discoloration or other concerning changes
Red streaking, severe swelling, difficulty breathing, severe allergic reaction, or other signs of a medical emergency require immediate medical attention.
If You Suspect an Infection
If you believe your piercing may be infected:
1 Contact a healthcare professional for evaluation.
2 Follow the medical advice you receive.
3 Notify your piercer or studio.
4 Do not remove the jewelry unless instructed to do so by a healthcare professional or qualified professional, as closing the piercing may interfere with drainage in some circumstances.
Clients with conditions that may affect healing or immune function should seek medical advice promptly if concerning symptoms develop.
5. PREPARATION FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
For the best possible experience, please prepare for your appointment by following these guidelines:
Stay Hydrated & Rested
Drink plenty of water and get a good night's sleep before your appointment.
Eat Before Your Appointment
Eat a balanced meal before your appointment. This may help maintain your energy and reduce the likelihood of feeling lightheaded or faint.
Avoid Alcohol & Intoxicating Substances
Do not arrive under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs.
Medications & Supplements
Inform your piercer about medications and supplements that may affect bleeding, healing, or your ability to safely receive a piercing.
Do not stop prescribed medication without first consulting your healthcare provider.
Arrive Clean
Shower before your appointment and arrive with clean skin. Avoid applying lotions, oils, perfumes, or other products directly to the piercing area unless instructed otherwise.
Wear Appropriate Clothing
Wear clean, comfortable clothing that provides easy access to the piercing area and will not unnecessarily rub or irritate the piercing.
Communicate With Your Piercer
Before the procedure begins, tell your piercer about any allergies, medical conditions, medications, previous piercing complications, or other concerns that may affect the procedure or healing process.
